Car / Van Conversions
With so many types of conversions or converted vehicles available it is important to do your research properly before buying. There are many specialist dealers who will provide details of the types and costs of conversions available. Many have websites which show their products but it is important that you speak to them by phone if you need any additional information.
Before buying make sure you try first – your chosen supplier should be able to arrange for you to try out one of their show vehicles.
As with other products the costs can range widely from a few hundred pounds for a hand throttle conversion to many thousands for fully electronic systems. There are hoists to lift you and your wheelchair seat into the car or you can even drive from your wheelchair. Whatever you are looking for there is sure to be an option and price suitable.
A useful place to start is ricability. They are an independent charity who publish practical, actionable and unbiased guides for older and disabled consumers based on thorough professional research.
Hand controls
One of the simplest ways of converting your car is using hand controls. Basically the accelerator and brake are modified so that they are hand operated. There are a number of different types available including radial controls – where a ring is fixed above or below the steering wheel to operate the accelerator, or a simple ‘push-pull’ lever which operates the brake and accelerator. These can be fitted from between £300 to £600.
Twin flip-up throttle controls
Left foot accelerators can be fitted to all makes and models of
automatic vehicles. The system incorporates two throttle pedals
fitted to the car which for safety reasons are connected so only
one pedal can be folded down at a time. This means a driver
can operate the throttle with the right or the left foot while the other
pedal is safely folded up out of the way.
Drive-from-wheelchair car
If you find transferring from your wheelchair a struggle and ‘drive-from-wheelchair’ car may be for you. Various features are available including –
Full remote control entry and exit. One press operation opens the tailgate, lowers the ramp and suspension to enable access and reverse process for closure.
Comes complete with standard drivers seat. For use by able bodied family and friends. This is also a highly useful feature when it comes to servicing the vehicle.
Electronic hand brake. Much easier to use than that original manual one.
Push/Pull hand controls. For maximum effectiveness for its users.
The prices shown apply nationwide for the purchase of Motability Scheme adaptations for all cars on the Contract Hire Scheme. All prices include standard installation and any maintenance where required. Further adjustments carried out by your installer may result in an additional charge.
