Pride Jazzy Select

Many thanks to Nattelie for this great review!

General Overview:

Weight limit – 21 stone

Distance range – around 12 miles

The anti-tip wheels are effective, - I've never fallen out of the wheelchair and it's never tipped over on me. Admittedly it does feel a bit scary as if I was going to fall out the first few times, but my confidence in the anti-tip wheels soon grew.

The chair is fairly sturdy and quite easily adjusted. However it's not the kind of powerchair that you could dismantle easily and put into the boot of a car, nor can it be tied down in a taxi as quite simply there's no where to tie. When it's turned off, unless it's in free wheel mode, there's no way it's going anywhere, which is reassuring when using a bus or other form of public transport. It can climb small kerbs although about 2 inches is it's limit. The seat that it has is a standard seat, not too different to a car seat. It doesn't take too long to charge and will run for a fair few miles. The steering is responsive and it turns on it's axis, - meaning it has a very small turning circle. The controls are very easy to use and the large pocket in the back of the seat can be very handy!

Personal Experience:

This was my very first powerchair. I had high expectations on what I wanted to gain from a powerchair and at the time it was the best powerchair that I could find in a disability shop.

Within a few weeks it started to make a funny noise. A bit like a wind up toy toy being wound up. This concerned me so I called the shop and they had someone look at it for me. The bushings had gone. A few weeks later and again it was making funny noises. The shop offered to replace it for me, - I'd had it less than 3 months. I hoped that would be the end of the problem.

Over then next year and a half, it went in for repair countless times, bushings, motor problems, steering problems, battery not holding charge and various other issues. The repair man was bewildered! There was no problems with the other powerchairs of the same model that I'd purchased, I wasn't over the weight limit and wasn't trying to do anything that the manual said it couldn't, so there shouldn't have been any problems.

Overall Opinion

This powerchair is fantastic if you're using it mostly indoors with occasional outdoor use. It's more than capable of doing it's job if it's on even ground most of the time and is fairly comfortable – especially for shorter people. However if you're tall like me and wish to use it frequently on the wonderful badly paved pavements of Great Britain along with making it go a fair bit of distance regularly, it's not a good powerchair. It works best on even, dry terrain. In shallow snow it will slide and become very light to steer, it's also recommended that you don't get the powerchair wet, or use it on grass where the soil isn't tightly packed.
