Kitchens and kitchen accessories
Many of us will spend a lot of time in the kitchen, whether it is because we are cooking or eating food, so it's one area of the house where it is really important to ensure that the design and layout suits your individual lifestyle and needs. This is particularly important for anyone with a mobility problem or any other kind of impairment which may affect how you go about your daily routines.
The M100 SpaceStation is the Worlds first accessible shelving system. The shelves come to you at the touch of a button. The space is totally accessible and just one SpaceStation can hold the accessible equivalent of 18 base units and 17 wall unit in a kitchen and it can carry even more than that 100 kg equivalent to 250 cans of soup (400grams each). The M100 SpaceStation can save an hour of paid care everyday and so the SpaceStation can pay for itself in 5 months. The M100 fits inside a worksurface depth 600mm , needs just a clear space 1000 mm wide, 2200 mm clearance height and a standard mains plug.
The SpaceStation comes complete with a SpaceSafe safety system, and easy slide sideways opening tambour doors. Optional extras include click up and fold away worksurfaces. It's not just for the kitchen A SpaceStation fits equally well into the office where able bodies people can use it too and save space, The SpaceStation can swallow a massive 48 box files. We have a short extract from our DVD in our web site www.spaceace.eu.com showing the capacity and the accessibility.
AKW Medicare
When designing kitchens, AKW take a number of things into consideration, including the nature and severity of a person’s disability, their height, their reach, and of course, how to utilise the available space most effectively. The overall aim is to create a safe kitchen environment that will serve the needs of the user and help to restore their independence.
AKW recently launched a National Surveying Service for its kitchen solutions and has a trained and experienced team ensuring that the best possible solution is found for its clients’ current and long term needs. Surveyors visit the clients’ home by appointment and using computer technology produce drawings of the proposed installation.
The company’s ranges include the Independence kitchen, which is designed and built around the abilities of the user. Workstation height can be quickly lowered or raised, making it ideal for multi-user kitchens. Units are supplied ready assembled and they are modular so that flexibility of layout is possible.
Also available is the Converter kitchen range, a purpose built kitchen for the elderly which can become fully wheelchair friendly within just half an hour. It is a fitted kitchen with easy, safe access lower level wall cupboards.
Easy access pull out storage drawers and carousel units, remove the need for bending or kneeling to access. To adapt the kitchen for a wheelchair user, converted sections are easily removed to give access to the main work stations. These converter sections can be replaced at a later date without damage to the kitchen.

One way of making things easier in the kitchen, is to use ergonomically designed utensils. Peta’s Easi-Grip range of kitchen knives and utensils can help to make food preparation a lot more manageable for anyone with weak hands or grip problems.
Ergonomically angled handles keep the hand and wrist in a neutral position, and a ‘soft-feel’ non-slip grip prevents the tools from turning in the hand, so that they are safe to use in wet or greasy conditions.
The range includes a bread knife, vegetable knife, carving knife and fork, cheese slice and a spatula. Also available is a pair of self-opening scissors, which have a large handle that allows the strength and control of the whole hand to be used - this is ideal for anyone with swollen finger joints. A spring reopens the scissors after each cut, whilst a safety lock keeps it closed when not in use.
