Many thanks to Brian Hazen for an interesting review!

I got my Champion 3000 in 1994 and it has been an awesome chair for me. I have tortured this chair off curbs and off road trails from Ohio to New Brunswick Canada and up and down the east coast.

When I bought the chair from a salesman he added about $1600 in accessories that I didn't need. I met a dealer later that was a chair user and he laughed when I got the chair and we stripped all the "extras" off of it. Arms rests, crutch holders, brakes, wheelie bars, clothing protectors, leather back pack and about a foot of height from the back rest.

I use the chair everyday for at least 6 to 8 hrs and could not do my job without it. Now that the chair is going on 12 yrs old I am looking at replacing some things. I normally go through a set of back tires every 6 to 8 months. Summers are hardest on them because of the amount of pavement miles. This past summer the chair and I got to the top of Mt Washington in New Hampshire. The staff were extremely accommodating and allowed me to park about 20 ft from the observation building. If you have not been....go!!

I am in the market right now for new castors. The castors I have are the originals and a dealer has told me they are not available anymore....That sucks because they have been tough as nails. I have replaced the bearings probably once a year because the snow, salt and sand in parking lots around here in the winter is pretty hard on them....But the 5 inch castors still have about an inch or so of wear left so I do have a little time to keep looking. The other thing I need to find are thumb rails. They are for a 24 inch aluminum spoke wheel. It has taken me 11 years to wear most of the "paint" off of them. I think I have left most of the paint on students desks and door frames and now my hands get very black after only a few minutes of wheeling. I would say they are anodized because whatever is on there is tough to get off in the first place.

The paint is a heavy metalic red and of course it is chipped in the usual places. I have put the pads back on the down tubes simply to make it look a little better but a friend of mine recently mentioned that it would probably be quite easy to match the colour with nail polish from any department store....That might just be an idea. I may even invest in a new seat pad...a local physio therapist rolls her eyes every time she sees me because I have not replaced the pad that came on the chair....Hey ....it works!!!

If anyone has a suggestion of a castor that may work for me....feel free to let me know.

Thanks

Brian

A bit of blurb -

A 'One Hand Pull' folding mechanism allows you to simultaneously fold both the backrest and the chair! A velcro strap then holds the frame closed when you transfer the Champion into the car.

A carbon chassis is available and reduces the overall weight by about 1kg, and improving its handling ability.

In addition, the axle mounting plate enables you to adjust the angle and height of the backrest, giving an enhanced riding position.

My opinion - it is an excellent looking chair. I tried it recently (through Gerald Simmonds) and it certainly folds down easily enough. My only problem is that the footplate is one piece where I need flip-ups. I have been told though that it could be modified. It seems well made and for a folding chair is pretty sturdy. The chair has been around for over ten years now so it has certainly 'proved' itself.

A SHORT REVIEW

LeoneĀ from Lumby, BC Canada submitted this review. Leone is an end user who has less than a month of experience with the product.

Strengths:I've only had it for a day, but I just had to write about it! I love it. It is so much lighter than my last chair and easier to fold and fits in my car perfectly.

Weaknesses: I have trouble gripping the bar to push myself as I have arthritis and the bar is kind of small and slippery.

Comments:I will write an update on my thoughts after having the chair for a while and get the problem with the bar dealt with my dealer as they are very good at solving problems and I have no doubt on my next review I will have no complaints.
